Academic writing
In the writing process, there are several steps and rules that we, as writers, must follow in order to reach accurate and comprehensible pieces of work. Some of the rules and patterns that should be taken into account are as follow:
- TOPIC SENTENCE: concept that is going to be developed. Thesis statement: general sentence to introduce the topic. Indent or skip a line (though not both ,as regards the style of writing for example A.P.A or what you have been asked to use).
- BODY: argumentative sentences that support directly the topic sentence. The concrete details must be careful chosen; it is necessary to regard the importance of the supporting sentences; it is necessary to give reasons for the sentences; and it is helpful to provide the reader with examples to clarify concepts that appear in the body of the paragraph. All the information should be chronologically ordered as well. The sentences and different paragraphs in a piece of writing should be bridged in order to give coherence to the whole piece.
- CLOSING SENTENCES: restate the topic sentence differently. It has two functions: 1. remind the audience about the topic sentence; 2. make them think about the topic.
- We must try on several versions before deciding on the definite writing and reading aloud is also an important step.
